Synopsis

Diabetes mellitus, genetik ve çevresel birçok nedene bağlı olarak ortaya çıkabilen bir metabolik hastalıktır. Bu hastalık, yağ, protein ve karbonhidrat metabolizmasında dengesizliklere ve kronik yüksek kan glukoz düzeyine neden olan, insülin salımı ve/veya aktivitesindeki sorunlardan kaynaklanır. Son araştırmalar, azalmış insülin salımının diyabet gelişiminde en büyük faktör olduğunu açıkça ortaya koymaktadır. Bu nedenle, pankreatik beta hücrelerinin apoptozisinin önlenmesi ve insülin salınımının artırılması, diyabet tedavisinde önemli terapötik yaklaşımlardan biridir. Çinko, krom, selenyum, magnezyum, vanadyum, demir gibi bazı minerallerin yetersizliği veya aşırılığının pankreatik adacıkları olumsuz etkileyerek insülin salınımında veya insülin sinyal yolunda dengesizliklere ve diyabet gelişimine yol açabileceği bildirilmiştir.
