Özet

Fonksiyonel besinler, temel besin gereksinimlerinin ötesinde, insan fizyolojisi ve metabolik fonksiyonları üzerinde ek faydalar sağlayan gıdalar veya bileşenler olarak tanımlanabilir. Bu gıdalar ve bileşenler, hastalıklardan korunmada ve daha sağlıklı bir yaşama ulaşmada etkinlik göstermektedir. Son yıllarda, insanların sağlık konularına verdiği önem arttıkça, tıbbi etkisi olan ürünler yerine doğal ürünlere ve fonksiyonel besinlere yönelmeleriyle birlikte, fonksiyonel besinlerin önemi de artmıştır. Diyabetinde dünya genelinde görülme sıklığının giderek artması ve yaygınlaşmasıyla hastalığı tedavi etmektense, hastalığı engellemenin daha etkili olduğunun düşüncesiyle fonksiyonel besinlere eğilim artmıştır. Epidemiyolojik çalışmalar, bazı fonksiyonel gıdaların diyabet riskini azalttığını ve diyabet tedavisinde etkili olduğunu göstermektedir.
