Salvia officinalis is an important medicinal plant due to its bioactive components and belongs to the Labiatae/Lamiaceae family. The homeland of the Salvia officinalis species is the Mediterranean and the Middle East, and today, it has spread all over the world, especially Europe and North America. Like other medicinal plants used in folk medicine, various studies have been conducted on sage extracts and essential oils due to their wide-ranging medicinal effects.
The potential antitumor activity of sage has been studied in various cancer cell lines and cancer animal models. In addition to its antiproliferative effect, it also has antimigratory and antiangiogenic effects. Extracts of this plant performed on various cancerous cell lines such as cervix adenocarcinoma(HeLa), colorectal cancer(HCT-116, HCT15, CO115, HT29), lung carcinoma(A549, H226), laryngeal carcinoma(Hep-2), melanoma(A375, M14, A2058, B16), insulinoma(RINm5F), prostate adenocarcinoma and oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma have been found to be proapoptotic and growth inhibitory effects in studies on various cancer cell lines. There are also studies with the opposite results in breast cancer (MCF-7) cell lines.
Sage plant, which also has an anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive  effect, has been found useful in the treatment of neuropathic pain due to chemotherapeutics. There are no pharmacokinetic studies on the extracts of the sage plant, which is used in many medical pathologies in traditional folk medicine.
